A Study on Maternal and child Health in an Urban Area

Abstract
A survey was conducted from 1 May, 1968 to 30 August, 1968 toward 854 children (infants) who were registered at Chongro-gu and Mapo-gu Health Centers on such subjects as status of well baby clinic, delivery and prenatal cares, in connection with age and educational level of children¢¥s mother.
As the result of this survey, the following conclusions were obtained:
1. Out of the 854 children, boys were 510 and girls were 344. It was found out that boys were registered at the health centers more frequently than the girls.
2. By age in months those in 1~2 months made up the largest percentage or 24.6 per cent and more than 50 per cent of the children were found to have been registered at the health centers before 4 months after birth.
3. By other of birth, the first-born boys and girls corresponded to 22.3 per cent and 16.8 per cent respectively, of all children registered.
4. Fathers graduated from high schools comprised the highest percentage of 42.8 per cent and among mothers primary school graduates were largest in percentage with 39.6 per cent. And 26.5 per cent of the father¢¥s occupations were that of merchants.
5. Breastfed children were most frequent(72.6 per cent). By educational level and age, the lesser the age and the educational level of mother were, the more frequent the breastfed children were.
6. B.C.G. and D.P.T prophylactic immunizations were found to have been given to most of the children but poliomyelitis and, smallpox vaccines were given to a few;
81.2% of the total children were immunized against B.C.G., 79.3% D.P.T., 38.7% poliomyelitis and 28.2% smallpox.
7. The rate of receiving prenatal care wes low with 33.0 per cent. Of total prenatal cares received, 21.4 per cent were received at hospitals, 70.8 per cent of the cares were received by mothers with college education and 56.7 per cent were received by mothers in the ages 25~29.
8. Status of infant care can be summarized as follows;
a) In the case of boys; regular and irregular visits to well baby clinics were 43.9% and 56.1% respectively.
In the case of girls; regular and irregular visits to well baby clinics were 29.3% and 70.7% respectively.
b) Classification of mother¢¥s educational level by regular and irregular visits to well baby clinics:
Rate of regular visit; middle school graduates were 63.1% or the highest.
Rate of irregular visit; primary school graduates were 87.9% or the highest
c) Rate of regular visit to well baby clinic by mother¢¥s age group was 52.0% in 20~24 age group.
9. Classification of delivery conditions by the attendant at deliveries, educational level and age of mother and birth order:
Deliveries attended by doctor and midwife were 42.6% and 23.3% respectively.
By educational level of mother; 85.4% of all deliveries by mothers with college background was attended by doctors, 37.8% of all deliveries by mothers with middle school background was attended by midwives.
By age of mother: 47.3% of deliveries by mothers aged 40 or more were attended by doctors and 33.1% of deliveries by mothers of age 30~34 were attended by midwives.
By birth order: The rate of delivery assisted by medical personnel was higher among children delivered earlier or later in terms of birth order.
10. Classification of delivery place by birth order and ucational level and age of mother:
By birth order; 66.6% of the 7th or later deliveries were dome at hospitals.
Hospital deliveries were seen among 45.4% in 25~29 age group and 80.5% in college graduate respectively.
